I've just contacted all my connections on LinkedIn and asked a couple of questions:
- Who is the the Ultimate Athlete at this time?
- Why?

I am bringing a survey I did a few years back, up to date. I will update with the results before the end of the year. Thanks for your participation!

Sorry to find this post a month after the fact . . . but you're right that Oregon has terrain appropriate for a great race.

One key issue with any race in the US is the permitting, and for a multiday race you'll need thousands and thousands of acres of contiguous wilderness land to operate on -- and for any *interesting* navigation you'll need permission for off-trail travel which we've found to be such a deal-breaker in the United States.

The US has other hurdles that Oregon can't control, such as a crazy legal framework and entrance visa requirements for athletes from foreign countries. Inside the US you don't really recognize it, but when shopping around for international venues for big endurance sports events . . . the US in general is not as attractive as you might think.

You're point about Oregon having amazing terrain is totally valid, however, and by all means don't let me dissuade you from putting together a world championship caliber adventure race (I'll gladly sign up!).

Steve - I thought about the running factor. But he was such a trailblazer that I wonder how he would have approached sports in today's world. Steve also had something else that transcends the great athletes from the rest. And that is charisma, which is timeless. Any athlete that can have such an impact on society gets a free pass to the top of the food chain.

Hey Alex,

Interesting post. There's no doubt that Prefontaine was a hell of a runner. If it weren't for his tragic death, who knows what he would have accomplished. That being said, I'd be interested to see how he would do in a competition where he'd have to compete in other types of events.

I know plenty of great runners who are quite uncoordinated and can't do much else other than run - don't think that I'm suggesting Steve was uncoordinated. A competition where people have to conquer all sorts of events is a great equalizer, and it would have been neat to see how he would have fared in such an environment.

Yves I agree with that athletes do hold some responsibilty to be role models but as a society we at times treat these athletes God Like and they are not. They are individuals that we really don't ,who have problems and insecurities in their own life. Just because someone is a phenomenal athlete that is playing on ABC and ESPN does not make them a role model to our youth it just mean they are a great athlete. The responsibilty of of being a role model to our youth is everyone's in society who can contribute to changing someone's life. Just cause your an athlete doesn't necessary mean that all of a suddent you are a role model to our youth, some of these individuals are not capable of that responsibility or even want it. I would rather have a real role model instead of someone who is doing it because his/her PR person says it will make you look good to the public. The power of being an American is the freedoms we are giving allow us to make a choice of who we want to be and it is time for us as a society to stop holding these athletes to something that may not be them. Yeah we all wish that these individuals were all role models but the reality is they are not and maybe we should stop telling them what they should do and allow them to make that choice when they are ready to make that commitment to change a childs life.

There's a multi-sporter that gets over-looked because he was Canadian. Lionel "The Big Train" Conacher played in the NHL, CFL, played baseball, played lacrosse, was a boxer and was a wrestler. Oh, and he was a member of parliament for the province of Ontario and for Canada. All this in a short 54 year life, which ironically ended while playing a charity softball game in Ottawa.
Lionel is in both the Canadian Football Hall of Fame and the Hockey Hall of Fame. Check out his Wikipedia file for more info: <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lionel_Conacher" rel="nofollow">

M. Jordan might just be the Ultimate Basketball Icon, but with that status comes a responsibility as a role model.
http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/news;_ylt=AjxiQhijE1xkLkNtcj8ZthY5nYcB?slug=aw-jordanhall091209&prov=yhoo&type=lgns

The role model aspect in professional sports is nearly gone today or often it is overshadowed by ego, sense of entitlement, big $$$$$ and bad behavior. Lets get sports back on track.
