Featured Photographer: Michelle Roche

Thank you to Michelle Roche for letting us use her photos that capture a variety of marine sports in Europe and the United Kingdom, including kite boarding and wind surfing.

In Michelle’s words:

My first experience of taking photos was when I was about 6 or 7 years old when I went on holiday with my parents. My father would let me take photos with his camera which was a Kodak Retinette 1A. After that my parents bought me my own Kodak Instamatic camera. Nowadays Im using a Canon 50D, Canon 20D, Canon D30, a 100-400mm Canon IS USM, and a 17-85mm Canon IS USM.

In Today’s World, Would Steve Prefontaine Be an Ultimate Athlete?

Oregon is a running state.

Steve Prefontaine is an Oregon legend.

YouTube Preview Image

If Prefontaine competed today, would he be an ultimate athlete?

Yes. The guy was setting American track records from the 2000 meter to the 10,000 meter runs before his tragic death in 1975. At the time, he was readying for the 1976 Olympics in Montreal.

The greatest athletes inspire people by the millions. Prefontaine had that hold on people.  They knew him. They loved him.

People saw a spark in Prefontaine that made them want to run. And run they did. Millions took up running in the 1970s, inspired by Pre and others like Frank Shorter. From that era, Nike emerged and to this day is the name associated with the world’s greatest athletes.

Prefontaine’s legend is extraordinary. What made him an ultimate athlete was something that is still important today. It’s the ability to perform at a world class level and also inspire millions of others to discover a connection and an athlete within themselves.

That is an ultimate athlete. And that’s what made Prefiontaine truly one of the greats of all time.

Jackie Robinson: An Ultimate Athlete Who Changed Sports History

YouTube Preview Image

In today’s sports, an athletes greatness is judge based on their performance. It is not many athletes who stand for something other than their sport.

When I think of athletes who have influenced history and influenced my participation in sports as an African American Athlete, I think of Jackie Robinson.

Some will argue with me and say Jesse Owens  stance in the 1936 Olympics against Hitler but in the heat of racial violence and protest during the civil rights movement in  America, Jackie Robinson set out to prove that a black man could play in major league baseball.

Jackie didn’t just want to play in the negro leagues. Jackie got his wish with the Brooklyn Dodgers.  Without his courage and love of baseball where would we all be?

Jackie Robinson broke a boundary that is greater than any record set by the record breaking African American  athletes of the modern age: Michael Jordan; Wilt Chamberlin; Willie Mayes; Hank Aaron; Kobe Bryant; Jesse Owens; Jackie Joyner Kersey and Wilma Roudolph broke.

All these athletes have had to overcome many trials and tribulations to become great but no other athlete has had as much pressure not to succeed as Jackie Robinson did. The racial  boundary Jackie broke is what makes Jackie Robinson an Ultimate Athlete.

The boundary of having someone not let you compete because of the color of your skin is greater than any record that will ever and will continue to be broken in sports.

Will It Be A Woman

YouTube Preview ImageIn so many sports gender becomes a very heated topic. You always run across the questions can women jump, run, swim, shoot, dribble, etc….like men.

It doesn’t matter what sport, the issue is there. There will always be gender comparison. This video shows some of the NBA and WNBA players doing the same moves. The video is not about gender. It is just about pure skills and skills only. Just the pure beauty of a great basketball move.

As we search for the Ultimate Athlete will it be the one who jumps higher, runs faster or will it be about the strength of a man versus woman.  As we take you on a journey to search for  the Ultimate Athlete will we find out that a woman might just be the Ultimate Athlete?

Will our 2010 Ultimate Athlete be a woman?

Oregon May Be The Perfect Location For Adventure Racing

adam on big brother 2Grant Killiam writes about the European dominance of the Adventure Racing World Championships. They’re in Portugal this year and in 2010 the championships will go to Spain. Is this a trend? Will they be in France come 2011 and then to the mountains of Switzerland for 2012?

He goes on to say that Switzerland may be the best place in the world for the championships. And better yet, he says, may be the New Zealand with its peaks and access to the ocean.

This would be very cool; Switzerland has the best terrain of anywhere I’ve been for a race such as this (with the possble exception of New Zealand, where you can ocean kayak in the morning and be glacier trekking that afternoon)

I think Grant overlooks  one place that has it all. That’s right here in Oregon, right on the 45th parallel. Like New Zealand, It is one of the few places in the world where you can snowboard in the morning, kayak in the afternoon and be out surfing on the Pacific Ocean as the sun sets in the western horizon.

Why does Europe have such a hold on the locstions for adventure racing world champonships? Grant attributes it in part to the national support that the championships receive.

I already know, however, that the 2009 World Championship is run in conjunction with Portugal’s national sports and tourism bodies.  This gives the organization the leverage and support to function at a level far above an individual race organizer — the resources of an entire national system are available to assist with logistics, permits, planning, outreach, etc.  I haven’t dug into it, but I suspect the same arrangement is in place in Spain, where governmental bodies are on board to assist in making the race a reality.

Grant makes the point that the United States is a bit different. We don’t have a national tourism board.  But we do have the infrastructure to hold world championship events. It requires a different model.

Yes, it sure does. It’s a different ball game in the states. But we are primed for these kinds of events….especially in Oregon.

Michael Jordan: The World’s Ultimate Basketball Icon

YouTube Preview ImageYeah some say, well he played in a different era, could he do the things that Kobe and Lebron are doing, day in and day out. Well, to those who have their debates there would be no Kobe or Lebron if there was no MJ.

Michael Jordan revolutionized the game of basketball. He brought a level of creative athleticism that no one had ever seen before.  He opened doors both on and off the court.

Jordan not only became a sports icon in America he still remains a global icon around the world. There has not been no other athlete, male or female who has influenced so many athletes from so many sports. Michael Jordan has had an influence that transcends basketball.

Really, who is greater than Michael Jordan?

Cricket, Kiteboarding and Surfing in the UK – Photos by John Hales

John Hales is our latest contributor in our effort to feature talented sports photographers from around the world. I like John’s mix of old and new sports:

Here’s a bit about John’s background from his profile on Flickr:

Born in Manchester a very long time ago, before Manchester United were the greatest footy team in the world, but Lancashire was the home great cricket (and still is).

Started taking pix when I was given bakerlite Brownie 127 at the age of 9. Have been snapping off and on ever since. Love digital, but still run one or two rolls of slide film, if only because the local camera club does slide competitions.
